Once an ability that causes a creature to connive begins to resolve, no player may take any other actions until it's done. Notably, opponents can't try to remove the conniving creature after you discard a nonland card but before it receives a counter.

- Menace: To block Prowler, defending player must assign two or more creatures to block it. Single-creature blocks are not allowed.
- Connive process: When another Villain you control enters the battlefield, Prowler's triggered ability goes on the stack. When that ability resolves, do these steps in order and without interruption: 1) Draw a card. 2) Discard a card. 3) If the discarded card was a nonland card, put a +1/+1 counter on Prowler.
- Timing and interruption: Once the connive ability begins to resolve, no player may take actions until it finishes resolving. For example, an opponent cannot remove Prowler after you discard a nonland card but before the counter would be placed.
- No card discarded: If no card is discarded (for example, your hand is empty and you couldn't draw, or another effect prevents discarding), you won't get a +1/+1 counter because the condition requires discarding a nonland card.
- Creature left battlefield: If Prowler leaves the battlefield after its connive ability begins resolving but before it would receive a counter, the connive process still happens (you still draw and discard). However, if you discarded a nonland card you can't put a +1/+1 counter on Prowler because it's no longer on the battlefield. Abilities that trigger "when [that creature] connives" will still trigger even if the creature has left the battlefield.

If no card is discarded, most likely because that player's hand is empty and an effect says they can't draw cards, the conniving creature does not receive a +1/+1 counter.
If a resolving spell or ability instructs a specific creature to connive but that creature has left the battlefield, the creature still connives. If you discard a nonland card this way, you won't put a +1/+1 counter on anything. Abilities that trigger "when [that creature] connives" will trigger.
