At the beginning of your end step, the game checks whether you control any permanent that has the Food artifact type. If you do not control any Food, Butterbur's ability triggers. If you do control a Food, the ability does not trigger.
If Butterbur's triggered ability is on the stack but, when it would resolve, you now control a Food, the ability does nothing and no Food is created.
The Food token created is an artifact token with the text: ", , Sacrifice this token: You gain 3 life." You can tap and sacrifice that token to pay that ability's cost and gain 3 life.
You cannot sacrifice the same Food to pay more than one cost. For example, you cannot sacrifice a Food token to pay two different activated abilities or to both tap/activate and pay another cost at the same time if that would require sacrificing it twice.
