- Tibalt's Trickery resolves and the targeted spell is countered. Then you choose randomly 1, 2, or 3 and that number is used for the milling step and affects how many cards are revealed/exiled as described.
- If Tibalt's Trickery targets a spell that can't be countered and it resolves, the spell is not countered but the milling and exile/possible-cast effects still occur.
- When you choose X for a spell with
in its cost (the countered spell), X counts as 0 for the purpose of comparing names. - If the card exiled that first has a different name than the countered spell and is a modal double-faced card (MDFC), you may cast either face of that card. If the card exiled is the back face of an MDFC, that can be cast as well.
- When you cast the exiled card 'without paying its mana cost' you can't choose alternative costs that replace the mana cost (for example Cascade replacements); you may pay additional costs (kicker) and must pay any mandatory additional costs.
- If there are no nonland cards in the library with a different name than the countered spell, the controller will exile (reveal) the entire library and then put those cards on the bottom of their library in a random order.

Rulings
If a player casts a spell "without paying its mana cost," they can't choose to cast it for any alternative costs. They can, however, pay additional costs, such as kicker costs. If the card has any mandatory additional costs, those must be paid to cast the spell.
Tibalt's Trickery can target a spell that can't be countered. If Tibalt's Trickery resolves, the target spell won't be countered, but all of the other effects will still happen.
If there aren't any nonland cards in that library with a different name than the countered spell, the player will exile all cards from their library, revealing all of them, and then they'll put those cards on the bottom of their library in a random order.
If the spell has {X} in its mana cost, they must choose 0 as the value of X.
