This is a modal double-faced card. You may either cast the front face as an instant (following normal casting rules) or play the back face as a land (following normal land-play rules). When checking legality and mana value, consider only the face you are using.

To determine what you can do with this modal double-faced card, consider only the face you intend to play or cast.

- If you choose the front face (Spikefield Hazard), treat it as an Instant with the front face's mana cost and rules text. You may cast it only if an effect allows you to cast that specific card (or you cast normally from a zone that allows casting). If an effect specifically says you may cast the card (rather than play it), you may not instead play it as a land.

- If you choose the back face (Spikefield Cave), treat it as a Land with the back face's characteristics. You may play it as your land for the turn if you are allowed to play a land. When determining whether you may play it as a land, look only at the back face's characteristics.

General rules that apply to both faces:
- Mana value is determined by the face you're considering. On the stack or battlefield, use the face that's up. In other zones, use the front face.
- If an effect puts a double-faced card directly onto the battlefield, it enters with its front face up. If the front face can't be put onto the battlefield, it can't enter that way.
- Modal double-faced cards can't be transformed or enter the battlefield transformed.
- If an effect allows you to play or cast a card chosen from a group, you may choose either face if that face meets the effect's criteria.
- For effects that ask you to name a card, you may name the name of either face; subsequent checks consider only the chosen name.

Częste pomyłki

Thinking you can cast the card as the back face (land) if an effect only allows you to cast it. If an effect allows only casting, you can't instead play it as a land.
Forgetting that to check whether you can play a face, you look only at that face's characteristics (ignore the other face).
Expecting the card can be put onto the battlefield transformed or can transform — modal double-faced cards can't transform.

If an effect allows you to play a specific modal double-faced card, you may cast it as a spell or play it as a land, as determined by which face you choose to play. If an effect allows you to cast (rather than "play") a specific modal double-faced card, you can't play it as a land.

If an effect puts a double-faced card onto the battlefield, it enters with its front face up. If that front face can't be put onto the battlefield, it doesn't enter the battlefield.

To determine whether it is legal to play a modal double-faced card, consider only the characteristics of the face you're playing and ignore the other face's characteristics.

The mana value of a modal double-faced card is based on the characteristics of the face that's being considered. On the stack and battlefield, consider whichever face is up. In all other zones, consider only the front face. This is different than how the mana value of a transforming double-faced card is determined.

In the Commander variant, a double-faced card's color identity is determined by the mana costs and mana symbols in the rules text of both faces combined. If either face has a color indicator or basic land type, those are also considered.

If an effect instructs a player to choose a card name, the name of either face may be chosen. If that effect or a linked ability refers to a spell with the chosen name being cast and/or a land with the chosen name being played, it considers only the chosen name, not the other face's name.
