Hungry Graffalon has Reach and an ability word, Increment, with a defined trigger: “Whenever you cast a spell, if the amount of mana you spent is greater than this creature's power or toughness, put a +1/+1 counter on this creature.”

Trigger timing and checks:
- When you cast any spell, check how much total mana you spent to cast that spell (all colors and generic) and compare that number to this creature's power and its toughness at that moment. If the mana spent is greater than either stat, the increment ability is put on the stack. If it is not greater than either stat, no trigger is created.
- The ability on the stack will resolve even if the spell that caused it is later countered or removed. However, when the increment ability resolves it checks again: if the mana spent is now greater than the creature's power or toughness at the time of resolution, you put a +1/+1 counter on it; otherwise it does nothing.
- The creature must be a creature for the trigger to be created. If it stops being a creature before the trigger would be created, there is no trigger. If it is no longer a creature when the ability resolves, the ability does nothing.
- It is possible that the specific stat (power or toughness) that satisfied the initial comparison changes between trigger and resolution; as long as at resolution the mana spent is greater than either current power or current toughness, the counter is added.

Example: You control a 1/3 Hungry Graffalon. You pay 2 mana to cast a spell. At cast time 2 is greater than the Graffalon's power (1), so increment triggers. While the trigger is on the stack an effect changes the Graffalon to 3/1. When the trigger resolves, 2 is greater than its toughness (1), so you still put a +1/+1 counter on it.

Increment triggers whenever you cast a spell and only if the mana you spent to cast that spell is greater than either this creature's power or its toughness at the time you cast the spell.
When an increment trigger is put on the stack it will still resolve even if the spell that caused it is countered or leaves the stack; the trigger does its comparison again as it resolves.
If, as the increment ability resolves, the amount of mana spent is no longer greater than either the creature's power or toughness (or the permanent is no longer a creature), the ability does nothing.
Increment only exists and can trigger while the permanent is a creature. If the permanent isn't a creature when the trigger would be put on the stack, it won't trigger.
The increment ability resolves before the spell that caused it resolves, so the +1/+1 counter (if it is put on) happens prior to that spell resolving.

Whenever you cast a spell, check the amount of mana you spent to cast it against the power and toughness of the creature with increment. If the amount of mana you spent isn't greater than either of that creature's stats, increment won't trigger at all.

When comparing the mana spent to the creature's stats as the increment ability resolves, it's possible that the stat that is less than the mana spent changes from power to toughness or vice versa. For example, say you control a 1/3 creature with increment and you pay two mana to cast a spell. Since the amount of mana you spent is greater than the creature's power, increment will trigger. While the increment ability is on the stack, an effect gives the creature with increment +2/-2, making it a 3/1. When the increment ability resolves, the creature will still get a +1/+1 counter since the amount of mana you spent is greater than that creature's toughness.

An increment ability will only trigger if the permanent it's on is a creature. Similarly, if the permanent is no longer a creature when its increment ability resolves, the ability won't do anything.
